KNOWING THE CROSSWORD

Kids Learning

Crossword is a very popular pastime game in many parts of the world. This game deals with the solving of a word puzzle with the help of hints.

There are two ways of writing a word in a crossword puzzle. One is across/horizontal and the other is down/vertical. Accordingly the hints are given in two parts, across and down. The words have to be found out with the help of the hints and also remembering the fact that what effect would the word have on the nearby blank spaces. Most of the times the number of letters of each word helps to find the right answer but in some cases the same number of letters can be there in two different words of the same meaning. For example, the word \”Agree\” is the hint; now there can be several synonyms of \”Agree\” that we can use. Now we also see that the number of letters in the crossword corresponding to the hint is 5. We can therefore use either \”tally\” or \”match\” or even \”check\” which somehow carries a same meaning as \”agree\”.

Therefore one has to have a great knowledge of the vocabulary and also a clear thinking power.
The game is time consuming and children around the world love it. There are many children and teens who regularly sit with the morning newspaper (where the crossword appears) and solve the crossword religiously. It also helps the kids to learn about the language and know synonyms and be able to solve anagrams.
